The wood gunnels are treated with Tung oil. We recommend refreshing 3 or 4 times per season. With a rag, apply a generous coat of oil to all exposed sides of the gunnels and deck plates and handles; allow to sit 5 to 10 minutes then wipe off excess with a clean rag. The seats, yoke and thwarts are varnished and don’t need special treatment. If you live where your canoe will be stored in freezing temperatures you must remove the first 8 to 10 screws from each end of both gunnels. If you don’t the difference in shrinkage factors between laminated hull and wood gunnels can cause hull cracks at the screw points. THIS TYPE OF DAMAGE IS NOT COVERED BY OUR WARRANTY.
